What if one person goes into mindless mode and just says Yes to everything? This is the premise of this new Jim Carrey comedy, Yes Man, the tale of one middle-aged, unattached depressed divorcee who would not want to commit to anything. The premise shows much promise as this is somewhat in the mold of one of Carrey's unique movies, Liar Liar (he can't stop lying). With the self explanatory title, Yes Man seems to make me wanna say yes but ends up with me shaking my head in disappointment. While it may generate a few laughs here and there. It is like a dish which seems alright but has leaves much more to be desired. (On a personal note, the saving grace is Zooey Deschanel who I find very charming)
Certainly, I would prefer to see Carrey in different genres as he was effective in The Majestic, The Truman Show, and of course, my personal favorite, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He can still deliver the goods in comedies but it becomes all too familiar like the rubber face, quirky voices, and the slapstick styles. As more recently successful comedies attest, dialogues are way more effective than the slapstick route.
I would rather not categorically say No to Carrey's latest film as it is mediocre at best. So I will stick to maybe, and leave at maediocrity where it belongs.
7 out of 10.
