Celebrating on the Road

A yearly birthday blog is long overdue. A sudden business trip to Metro Manila and an otherwise expected empty wallet laid an uneventful 31st birthday.

I am a birthday whores. I like to spend it with large groups preferably on the beach singing until the wee hours of the morning to Barry Manilow songs. that's no the only complication - I also have different groups of friends. There's the homebrewed friends, the office pals, the high school buddies, the Smartbrands tropa, the Dota playmates and some other friends in between.

The last birthday I had was different from the rest. It as the first time I spent in a zip code other than 4400. I did not invite any friend to any gathering. And I actually celebrated it at around 10 PM when I got to Naga. The actual celebration was usual, drinks, singing and a hard hitting hangover in the next morning to cap it all off. Come to think of it, it was no different than the rest.

What am I blabbering about? Actually it's nothing. It's just my natural tendency to blow things out of proportion. If I was online I would be reacting to every birthday wall post greeting on facebook. If my phone wasn't dead for a few hours, I would be replying with lots of thanks. If I was in Naga, even if I was dead broke I will find a way to get some cash and splurge on a drinking marathon with friends, first come first served.

They say 31st is the last day in the calendar. This is pushing the envelope when there are months when only 30,29 or 28 appear. But what is age other than being a number? What is a birth date other than being another budget blasting event? How can it be special when it is spent just like any other day? The questions linger and shall recur on the next 365th day.
